Pasadena Slavin Building

Pasadena Slavin Building

Successful local builder and contractor, Matthew Slavin, hired architect Frederick Roehrig in 1904 to design a new six-story brick building for the northwest corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Colorado Street. Roehrig came up with a simple utilitarian design, its only ornaments consisting of a small cornice running around the top of the building and a classical pediment to mark the entrance on Fair Oaks Avenue to the offices upstairs. Scheid 2006, p 55

The entrance remains, but an Art Deco facade was later added.

Chamber of Commerce Building

The Chamber of Commerce Building ... was the first steel-frame building in the downtown. Built just east of the railroad tracks, and extended west to Broadway (now Arroyo Parkway), it set the tone for later large office buildings along Colorado Street in the 1920s. It was also set back to allow for the future widening of Colorado Street. The Chamber of Commerce Building was remarkable not only for its six-story height, but also for its large footprint. Builtin a U-shaped plan to allow a central light well for offices, the building was designed by Los Angeles architects Parkinson and Bergstrom. Only the heavy ornamental cornice and a restrained absract pattern in colored terra-cotta and brick decorate the overall ochre brick exterior. Scheid 2006, p 94

Union Building built its new building [on the northeast corner of Colorado and Raymond] across from the Kinney Block [on the northwest corner] in 1901. Its sober design, by architect Charles W. Buchanan (1952-1921), also stipulated an iron frame, but the narrow windows and thick, brick walls exude solidity. The local Elks lodge met upstairs, as evidence by the elk head mounted on the corner of the building ... . The building received a new art deco facade in 1929. Scheid 2006, p 51

Citizens' Bank building

In 1906, Parkinson and Bergstrom designed a one-story building for Citizens' Bank in reinforced concrete at the northeast corner of Marengo Avenue and Colorado Street. In 1914, six stories were added, making it taller than the Chamber of Commerce Building. The first-floor exterior is beautifully decorated in glazed cream terra-cotta. Scheid 2006, p 95
