The Board of Public Works is a five-member committee that approves contracts for public works. In other words, the Board oversees the City's custodial needs, such as trimming trees and fixing potholes. It is the only full-time paid committee in the city appointed by the Mayor.

What is the most important position in a school? People will tell you the principal, or they will tell you the teachers. But it is the custodian, because they keep the place running. The Board of Public Works is like that in the City of Los Angeles. (Mary-Louise Reeves, City Hall Tour 2012 March 02)
