בראשית Bereshith (Genesis) is a prehistory of the Israelites.
Genesis 1-11 describe the start of the world from a Jewish or Israelite perspective, including the story of Adam and Eve. God dwelt with Adam and Eve in a garden he planted, but they disobeyed him and so he cast them out of the garden and humanity ceased to bask in the direct presence of god.
Genesis 12-50 tell how Abram of Ur is commanded by God to leave Ur, his and his ancestors' land, and settle in Canaan. Abram arrives in Canaan, where God promises him that he will have many descendants who will form the Israelite tribes and populate Canaan.
