The books of the prophets begin with Joshua, the successor of Moses whose military leadership wins Canaan for the Israelites who finally inherit the land.

Joshua 1-12 tells of killing kings and taking land, while Joshua 13-30 sees Joshua going to every tribe and assigning them their own land. Joshua gives great insight into Israel as a tribal society under the leadership of a prophet, not a king.
